GUTENBERG OPENS ITS WALLS TO RICHMOND ARTISTS!
JOIN US ON Wednesday, Oct. 7th @ 6pm
as GUTENBERG presents "The Rise and Fall of Iron Town"
- Artworks by Matthew Damian Ritchie -
Artist Statement
The title of the show “The Rise and Fall of Iron
Town” refers to the Hayao Miyazaki film Princess Mononoke. In this
film the boy, Ashitaka, must confront his fate in order to survive his
encounter with a boar consumed by hate. Iron Town is a fictitious town
in the film Princess Mononoke where their ambition leads them to destroy
the existing forest in order for their town to survive. The images I
choose to paint, chronicle Iron Town’s beginning, middle and it’s
eventual collapse to nature’s awesome power. Though this work is
a slight departure from my former body of work, it still heavily relates
to it in the stylized appearance of the manga/anime characters to the
bright vibrant hard-edged colors that come from popular culture.
Matthew Damian Ritchie received his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth
University in 2006 double majoring in Painting and Printmaking and Sculpture
and Extended Media. He received his MFA from Tyler School of Art in 2009
where his focus was in Drawing and Painting. Currently Matthew Damian
Ritchie teaches Drawing in the Foundation Department at Virginia Commonwealth
University.
This show will be the 4th installment of the Gutenberg
Gallery - a calender of shows that highlight a different
local artist on our walls each month. Openings will
be held on Winedown Wednesdays and sponsored by local
importer Harlan Wines and Cafe Gutenberg, with complementary
tastings by both.
We hope you will enjoy this evening with us and celebrate
the FLAVORS, COLORS and SOUNDS of RICHMOND!
